Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) is a well-known zoo located within the picturesque Jubilee Park in Jamshedpur. Recognized as a ‘Medium’ category Zoo by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), TSZP has consistently strived to meet the prescribed standards set by the authority.
The CZA evaluates zoos periodically to ensure the welfare of the animals and to stipulate conditions for their improvement. TSZP has undergone evaluations by the CZA at regular intervals, and based on their recommendations, several enhancements have been made. These include the creation of a veterinary hospital equipped with a postmortem room and incinerator, the relocation of animal enclosures, the establishment of separate entry and exit gates for visitors, as well as the strengthening of the perimeter wall.
In July 2020, the CZA approved the new layout plan for Tata Steel Zoological Park. However, due to the unforeseen circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of the plan faced delays, and the actual work commenced in 2022. To ensure a systematic and efficient execution, the entire project has been phased out, with an estimated completion date set for the year 2025.
In a recent development, Tata Steel Zoological Park underwent a remarkable remodeling, and it was inaugurated by Tata Steel MD and CEO, TV Narendran, on 7th January 2022. The revamped zoo now houses a diverse range of wildlife, with a total of 432 individual animals representing 49 different species. Among these, there are 19 species of mammals, 26 species of birds, and 4 species of reptiles.
Tata Steel Zoological Park continues to strive for excellence and aims to provide a safe and enriching environment for its animal residents. In line with this vision, the zoo has future plans to introduce additional species. Some of the animals planned to be housed by the Zoological Park in the near future include Giraffes, Mouse Deer, Indian Giant Squirrels, Sarus Cranes, Demoiselle Cranes, Rosy Pelicans, Adjutant Storks, Military Macaws, and Yellow Monitors.
