The Magnificent Devi Sthal Mata Akarshini Temple
On January 15th, thousands of devotees will gather at the famous Devi Sthal Mata Akarshini Temple, situated on the top of a 320 feet high hill in Kharsawan. This temple, located 6 kilometers away from Kharsawan, is renowned as one of the most significant temples in Jharkhand.
Aakhan Yatra: A Celebration of Devotion
Every year, on the second day of Makar Sankranti, the people of Kharsawan celebrate Aakhan Yatra with great pomp and show. This auspicious day marks the celebration of the famous goddess of Kharsawan. Devotees from Jharkhand and neighboring states of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and far-off places come together to offer their worship.
The Aakhan Yatra at Mata Akarshini Temple is a symbol of devotees’ faith. It is believed that starting a new and auspicious work on this day brings blessings and prosperity. The temple is adorned with a crowd of thousands of devotees, creating an atmosphere of devotion and spirituality.
A Mythical Transformation
Legend has it that one day, after completing the puja, the temple priest realized that he had left his sword inside the temple. As he ascended the hill in the evening to retrieve it, he witnessed a remarkable sight. The goddess was present, having her meal. Upon seeing the priest, the goddess stopped eating and declared that the temple doors would be closed forever.
In a moment of divine intervention, the temple transformed into a rock, leaving the priest astonished. The British government, aware of the rock’s rumored abundance of gold, ordered its destruction. However, as they attempted to break the rock using machines, a strange phenomenon occurred. The rock breakers vomited blood and died, and the stone-breaking machine was damaged beyond repair.
Witnessing this inexplicable event, the British government decided to halt the destruction of the rock. Today, Maa Akarshini Devi is worshipped daily from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm on this very rock, serving as a testament to the divine power and mystique surrounding the temple.
A Place of Worship and Celebration
The government has declared the area around the temple as a tourist spot, complete with residential houses, toilets, parks, and water taps. Devotees and visitors flock to this picturesque location to celebrate the New Year with puja and picnics.
During these festivities, people come together to dance, sing, and revel in joy. Regardless of age, everyone joins in the celebrations, creating an atmosphere of unity and happiness.
Visiting the Devi Sthal Mata Akarshini Temple not only offers a chance for spiritual rejuvenation but also provides an opportunity to witness the rich cultural heritage of Jharkhand. The mesmerizing beauty of the temple, coupled with the devotion and enthusiasm of the devotees, makes it a truly unforgettable experience.
